Founded in North London in November 1987 by Stephen Meixner and Jonathan Grieve  they were later joined by Stephen J. Pomeroy.  What their fans say: "...for dark ambiance...Contrastate set the standard way back when, and very few have even come close. Jonathan Grieve and Stephen Meixner are the "Lennon and McCartney" of the genre." (a pinch of salt required)
